Time series plot
Plot observations in the order they happened. A reference line shows the mean or a limit you type. This is not a control chart: there are no control limits and no run rules. Use the control-chart sheet when you need X-bar, individuals, or a p chart.
The example holds near 10, with one point at 11.8. That point is an event in the sequence. It is not a control-limit signal, because this chart has no limits.
Look for the patterns a run chart shows well: a shift after a material lot or tool change, a drift as a heater or a tool wears, a repeating cycle by shift or by machine, and a step in the spread. Mark the time of each known change beside the data so the picture can be read against it.
Use it before a control chart, when there are not yet enough points for limits, or to show a trend to people who do not read control charts. Once the process is steady and you have 20 or more subgroups, move to the control chart for limits and rules.
